Reinsurance

← All Terms

Reinsurance is insurance purchased by an insurer to transfer part of its risk to another carrier. It stabilizes results and extends capacity, and it ties the reinsurer to the quality of the primary insurer's claims handling.

A reinsurer relies on the cedent's data and reserving. When claims are litigated, the reinsurer's loss depends on how the cedent manages them and on the legal environment of the venues involved.

That makes independent measurement of outcome and duration valuable to both sides. A shared, reproducible view of how matters tend to resolve reduces disputes over reserves and recoveries.

Reinsurance is not a guarantee of payment on every claim. It responds according to its terms, attachment points and exclusions.
