Settlement Bridge

← All Terms

A settlement bridge is short-term capital advanced to a law firm against its fee on a settlement that has been signed but not yet paid. It covers the gap between agreement and funds, and it is repaid when the settlement is disbursed.

Once a settlement is signed, the cash can still be weeks or months away while releases are executed, liens are resolved and funds are distributed. A bridge advances part of the firm's fee in that window. Criterica Capital is a funder, and this is among the structures it funds: up to 90 percent of the firm's fee on a signed settlement.

Because the outcome is already agreed, the risk differs from a case-stage advance. The remaining questions are whether the settlement closes, how long disbursement takes and what ranks ahead of the fee. Underwriting concentrates on those mechanics.

A settlement bridge is not an advance on a case that has not settled. It is a bridge between a signed agreement and received cash.
