Origination

← All Terms

Origination is the sourcing and initial documentation of a new position, from first contact through underwriting and funding. The quality of origination sets the data quality of everything downstream.

At origination, the information that will support every later estimate is captured: the matter, the parties, the stage, the fee terms and the representations made by the seller. Fields left blank or filled loosely at this point cannot be recovered cheaply later.

Origination channels differ in how much they can verify, from counsel referrals to direct intake to portfolio purchases. The record should state the channel and what was checked.

Origination is not the same as underwriting. One finds and documents the position. The other decides whether and how to fund it.
