Venue

← All Terms

Venue is the particular court or location where a case is heard, chosen among those with proper jurisdiction. It affects the judge, the jury pool, the procedure and the speed of the case.

Different venues behave differently even under the same law. Docket congestion, local rules, the judges' habits and the character of the jury pool all vary, and those differences show up in both outcomes and duration.

That is why forum is treated as a pricing input. A cohort built from matters in the same forum is a better peer group than one pooled across the country.

Venue is not the same as jurisdiction. Jurisdiction is the court's power to hear a case. Venue is the appropriate place among courts that have it.
