Identity Resolution

← All Terms

Identity resolution is the work of confirming that different identifiers, name formats and filing conventions refer to the same matter, party, attorney or judge. A record base is only as sound as its resolution.

One case can appear under a state docket number, a related federal removal number and a reporting service's own identifier. A repeat litigant or an attorney can appear under slightly different names across filings. Resolution confirms these are one entity before the record base counts them once.

The work is continuous. New records are checked against the resolved base before being added, and the rule itself is re-validated against the full base on a schedule to catch missed matches and incorrect merges of distinct matters that only looked alike.

Identity resolution is not fuzzy matching alone. Any figure that groups by firm, judge or party depends on it, and the party discloses how it was done.
