Lineage

← All Terms

Lineage is the documented path from a primary source to a field used in a calculation, including the source, the retrieval date and every transformation applied on the way. A figure without lineage cannot be audited.

Lineage lets a reviewer follow a number backward. For any figure relied on, the party can show where each input came from, when it was retrieved, how it was parsed and normalized and which rules derived the final field.

A transformation that cannot be reproduced from its log is not permitted. When a source changes, for example a court revises a docket, the change is applied as a dated update with the earlier state kept, and figures computed before the update are not silently restated.

Lineage is not a diagram in a slide deck. It is a record that exists for every field and can be produced on request.
