Post-Judgment Interest

← All Terms

Post-judgment interest is interest that accrues on an entered judgment from the date of entry until it is paid, at a rate set by statute. It partly compensates for the delay of collection.

Rates are often tied to a statutory benchmark and vary by forum. The accrual continues through appeal in most systems, which affects the value of a judgment that is under challenge.

For a judgment portfolio, the interest rate is an input to expected return, but only to the extent the judgment is collectible. Interest on an uncollectible judgment adds nothing in cash.

Post-judgment interest is not a protection against collection risk. It is a statutory accrual that depends on eventual payment.
