Label Basis

← All Terms

A label basis is the documented source and rule by which an outcome label was extracted from a record. A label is only as good as its basis, and where the basis is weak the claim is qualified or withheld.

Every outcome label comes from somewhere: a disposition code, a docket entry, a ruling, a regulatory notice. The basis records which field, which rule and which source, so a reviewer can see how a matter became a positive or a negative example.

Public records code how matters end only coarsely. They often cannot distinguish which negotiated outcomes were settlements or which party prevailed. A label that pretends otherwise would carry that error into every model trained on it, so the claim is withheld.

A label basis is not the label itself. It is the evidence that justifies the label, and it is retained with the record as part of its lineage.
