Median

← All Terms

The median is the middle value of a distribution: half of observations fall below it and half above. For durations it is the time by which half of a cohort has resolved.

The median is resistant to extreme values, which is why it is preferred to the mean for skewed data such as case durations. Plans are often built around it.

On its own it conceals the tail. A matter's median can look quick while the 90th percentile runs far beyond it, and the gap between the two is where financing pressure collects.

The median is not the expected duration of a particular matter. It describes a cohort, and half of the cohort will take longer.
